According to the American Psychiatric Association, in 2017, the United States saw over 72,000 deaths due to drug overdoses, a number that doubled in a decade, with opioids playing a major role. Opioids, ranging from natural compounds like morphine to synthetic versions like fentanyl, interact with the brain to reduce pain, but can lead to misuse and overdose, with synthetic opioids implicated in the majority of opioid-related deaths by 2021. Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) includes FDA-approved medications like methadone and buprenorphine, combined with counseling and behavioral therapies.
